Our Story

FRIENDS of SIES is a parent-run board that raises funds to support the academic, physical, social and emotional well-being of each student at SIES.

Our mission

We exist to provide direct financial support to enhance the learning experience in ways that strengthen the academic, physical, social and emotional well-being of each student at SIES — formally, to raise funds to enhance the ability of Sullivan's Island Elementary School to attain its educational goals.

An island tradition

FRIENDS grew out of a long Sullivan's Island tradition of residents and local business leaders investing directly in their neighborhood school — historically "a printer, a restauranteer, a developer, a lawyer, a banker, among others," volunteering their expertise. Together they created a permanent endowment at the Coastal Community Foundation, intended as their collective memorial, to support the school beyond what the Charleston County School District provides.

That spirit is intergenerational by design: the community models philanthropy for the very kids who benefit from it. Sullivan's Island Elementary is, in our community's words, an integral part of our island's culture — serving families across Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, and Mount Pleasant.

How giving works

FRIENDS raises and holds its money through the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina (CCF), a 501(c)(3) public charity that acts as our tax-exempt custodian. Donations are tax-deductible through the Coastal Community Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Funds flow through two CCF vehicles: the Sullivan's Island School Endowment, a permanent endowment, and the Sullivan's Island School Grant Fund, the working fund used for annual spending.

The 2026–2027 Board

FRIENDS is a parent-run, self-perpetuating volunteer board. Members serve two-year terms, and the board meets quarterly, organized into Governance, Internal Affairs, and External Affairs committees.
